GYUMRI ARTS

Gyumri Arts is an online platform promoting Gyumri and Shirak province, traditional Armenian arts and crafts as well as pottery. Their artwork represents Gyumri and ancient Armenian symbolism, exclusive handmade works inspired by Armenian history.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteers can assist with website development, finance, social media and marketing, design and product packaging.

GYUMRI MUNICIPALITY

Gyumri is an urban municipal community and the second-largest city in Armenia, serving as the administrative center of Shirak Province in the northwestern part of the country. Formerly known as Leninakan during the Soviet era, Gyumri flourished as a significant industrial and textile center within Soviet Armenia. Prior to the devastating Spitak earthquake of 1988, the city’s population soared to over 200,000. However, the earthquake inflicted severe damage, drastically reducing the population to 121,976 as per the 2011 census. Today, Gyumri continues to grapple with the lasting effects of the 1988 earthquake, but remains known as the cultural hub of Armenia due to the many artists and craftsmen who originated from the city. The municipality is the office that works to serve the community’s administrative activities, organize public events, and develop the city into a more prosperous and comfortable one.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteers at the Gyumri Municipality engage in diverse initiatives aimed at promoting tourism, historic preservation, community development, and cultural enrichment. Additionally, volunteers undertake development projects for rural areas in the Shirak province, with a focus on long-term tourism initiatives and agricultural development. Volunteers also explore and suggest innovative promotional methods while curating website sections dedicated to Urban Culture, Adventure, Wellness, Nature, Religion, and Cultural Heritage.

SHIRAK STATE UNIVERSITY

Shirak State University is the largest educational institute in the northern part of Armenia. It was opened in 1934 as a pedagogical institute during the Soviet Union, through the efforts of S. Movsisyan. In 2016, the institute was restructured to become the public university of the Shirak Province. It currently offers 28 bachelor’s degrees as well 16 master’s degrees. As of 2017, the university has around 6,000 students and approximately 80,000 graduates since its founding in 1934.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteers organize language clubs focusing on English, German, French, and Spanish, facilitating opportunities for language learning and cultural exchange. Additionally, volunteers may assist with grant writing initiatives to secure funding for university projects and programs and organize/conduct workshops on a diverse range of topics, catering to the interests and needs of the university community.

NOR LUYCE MENTORING CENTER FOR YOUTH NGO

Nor Luyce believes in empowering girls from orphanages and low-income families to become self-sufficient and successful young women. Their mission is to provide teenage girls with one-on-one mentoring relationships, offering them role models and valuable learning experiences. In addition to mentorship, their program includes skill-building trainings to help girls develop career plans, enhance their compatibility with peers, and achieve self-sufficiency. Through Nor Luyce’s comprehensive three-stage mentorship program, they are transforming the future for young girls in Gyumri by offering them extensive opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteer usually provide support to the HR department, facilitate connections with organizations abroad, help with social media and PR initiatives, organize counseling trainings for mentors and mentees, offer assistance in grant writing and editing, and provide help in videography. Each volunteer’s tasks are tailored to his/her individual background and skills to ensure maximum impact and effectiveness.

POPOK ANIMATION STUDIO

Popok Animation was founded in 2018 in Armenia, and with a team of talented artists, has become one of the biggest 3D animation service providers in Eastern Europe. Their studio offers computer graphic services for different types of projects, such as animated shorts, TV series, feature films, video gaming, and commercials.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Tasks at the Studio involve assisting the executive director with daily documentation, conducting research and reaching out to potential partners, drafting daily emails and other correspondence, providing social media management services, overseeing project management, and assisting with ongoing projects within the company.

IMPACT INNOVATIONS INSTITUTE (SAFE YOU)

Impact Innovations Institute (IMIN) is a women-led social enterprise founded in 2020, with the mission to tackle global social problems through innovative tech solutions. IMIN has developed the Safe YOU solution, a mobile app and a multistakeholder web platform to prevent and combat violence against women and girls.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Typical tasks encompass active participation in podcasts, contributing to the organization and coordination of events, and collaborating with international partners.

BERLIN ART HOTEL

Berlin Art Hotel in Gyumri is a social pilot enterprise of the German Red Cross Berlin. Its aim is to support and develop medical care in the Gyumri branch of Berlin Center for Mothers and Children. The company supports a polyclinic in the city, which was built and equipped thanks to the donations of the Berlin population, as well as the realization of other social projects. All income from the hotel and other commercial activities are used exclusively for social and non-profit purposes. The hotel also serves as a venue for exhibiting and showcasing works by renowned artists from Gyumri and the Shirak Region.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteer opportunities at the Berlin Art Hotel include roles in the tourism industry, event management, and translation services, offering individuals the chance to contribute to the hotel’s mission of social support and cultural promotion.

HERBS & HONEY TEA SHOP

Herbs & Honey, a social enterprise, operates as a tea-shop restaurant specializing in ecologically clean products sourced from local farmers and small family businesses. With a focus on sustainable employment and natural products, the establishment offers over 35 varieties of wild herbal teas, locally gathered at high altitudes in northwest Armenia, alongside blended teas infused with natural dried fruits. Additionally, the menu features a diverse selection of locally produced healthy meals, including vegetarian and vegan options. It employs over 20 people and some 10 families benefit from its activities by supplying their products.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteer opportunities range from graphic design and social media management to business plan development and bartending. Moreover, individuals interested in farm work are welcome to contribute their skills and efforts to further the enterprise’s mission of promoting sustainability and supporting local communities.

GYUMRI TECHNOLOGY CENTER (GTC)

GTC, established through collaboration between the Enterprise Incubator Foundation, the RA Government, and the World Bank, aims to position Gyumri as a hub for information and high technologies regionally and internationally. The mission of the Center is to provide educational opportunities for local students interested in computer programming, design, science and math and to leverage technology education to provide long-term employment opportunities in the region. Its objectives encompass the development of technical and business skills, the promotion of technological entrepreneurship, and the commercialization of innovative research.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: The center offers various volunteer opportunities spanning office administration, research, fieldwork, teaching, writing/editing, business management and PR/marketing. Volunteers with relevant backgrounds can lead training sessions in programming, engineering, languages, and other fields to contribute to the center’s overarching goals of fostering innovation and economic development.

GYUMRI LANGUAGE HOUSE

Gyumri Language House teaches a wide range of foreign languages both written and conversational. They have courses in English, Spanish, French, German, Greek, Portuguese, Persian, Turkish, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteers are welcome to contribute to their various language programs by teaching foreign languages and leading foreign language clubs.

GYUMRI BRANCH OF YEREVAN KOMITAS STATE CONSERVATORY

Komitas State Conservatory is a state-owned college of music that prepares knowledgeable and broad-minded young composers perfectly matching the requirements of the modern world of music.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteers are tasked with organizing and conducting English classes for both staff and students, developing and maintaining websites, creating promotional videos for marketing and public relations, and assisting with the preparation of brochures for education and marketing purposes.

GYUMRI BRANCH OF THE STATE ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS OF ARMENIA

Established in 1997, the Gyumri branch of the State Academy of Fine Arts is a unique place with a long and proud tradition of intellectual rigor, pursuit of innovative knowledge and creative arts. The fields of study at the Academy include painting, sculpturing, graphics, history and theory of art, fashion modeling, design, decorative applied arts.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteers will have the opportunity to work with students, lead temporary art projects, curate exhibitions, and more. Additionally, volunteers may contribute to the development of the curriculum by conducting research and implementing innovative educational strategies.

GYUMRI AMERICAN CORNER

The American Corner is a United States Department of State-sponsored initiative inaugurated worldwide over 10 years ago. There are more than 480 Corners in 70 countries all around the world under the program. The fundamental function of American Corners is to make information about the United States available to foreign publics at large. They provide access to current and reliable information about the U.S. via book, video, and DVD collections, the Internet, and through local programming to the general public. American Corners serve as regional resource centers for information and programs highlighting American culture, history, current events, and government.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: the Gyumri American Corner (GAC) relies on volunteers to organize and lead English clubs, including Conversation clubs, Film clubs, and debate clubs. Volunteers are instrumental in running these clubs three times a week, typically lasting about an hour each session. They can additionally assist with event organization, catering to various interests such as reading, debate, and activities for kids.

ENDANIK YOUTH CREATIVE CENTER

“Endanik” Youth Creative Center SNCO was founded in 1991 and aims to solve the problems of teenagers from Gyumri. The aim of the center is to fulfill additional teaching and educational function, by organizing the free time of youth and creating conditions to develop their interests, to build up their spiritual, creative abilities, aesthetic, physical, patriotic and military education, to give them knowledge about ecology and applied sciences.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteers play an active role by teaching English/French to children aged 10-16, delivering presentations on various cultural topics in English, and organizing skill-building classes such as sewing, drawing, dancing, or other arts and crafts activities for the children.

EMILI AREGAK DAY CARE CENTER FOR HANDICAPPED CHILDREN

Emili Aregak is a development center for youth with disabilities. The mission of the center is to involve the disabled children and their families in society and to ensure they get fair treatment by providing a range of supporting and developing services.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteers are welcome to contribute their skills and time to assist in various capacities, including therapy, counseling, and social support.

CREATON ACADEMY

CreateON Academy specializes in city tours, educational trainings related to the tourism sector, and the initiation of projects aimed at enhancing city infrastructures.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteers are tasked with conducting market research, fostering company development, establishing partnerships with sector representatives, and organizing marketing trainings for staff. Additionally, they engage in activities associated with the service sector to further the organization’s objectives.

ARMENIAN CARITAS NGO

Armenian Caritas, founded in 1995 by the Armenian Catholic Church with extensive support from the Catholic Relief Services, focuses on social protection, community-based development, public health improvement, migration and integration, and humanitarian and development activities. Their domestic efforts aim to enhance living and educational conditions for vulnerable social groups and implement sustainable reintegration measures for returnees. Since inception, Armenian Caritas has directly assisted thousands of individuals.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteer responsibilities include conducting English club sessions and supporting the Public Relations officer with communications.

AREVAMANUK FAMILY AND CHILD CARE FUND

Arevamanuk Fund’s mission is to develop humane and democratic approaches within society to address the mental and psycho-social needs of both adults and children. Their goal is to provide psycho-social and special educational services aimed at strengthening families, promoting child protection, and enhancing mental health. The organization offers psychological counseling and therapy for children aged 2 to 18 and their families, both through individual and group sessions. They also organize special educational and speech therapy services. Additionally, they promote interventions aimed at safeguarding children’s rights and advancing mental health through community-based services.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteer tasks include leading teenager clubs, English clubs, and computer classes, particularly suitable for volunteers with a background in social work who are passionate about working with children.

ANES FASHION

At Anes Fashion, the mission is to offer the customers exclusive, elegant, and iconic designs of high-quality women’s and children’s clothing. With a commitment to excellence in the fashion industry, they value creativity and innovation in everything they do.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: As a volunteer at Anes Fashion, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to the creative process and support their marketing efforts. You’ll work closely with the designer to brainstorm new ideas and help bring them to life. Additionally, you may collaborate with the social marketing manager to develop and execute engaging social media campaigns, offering fresh ideas and insights for content creation and PR strategies.

AGATE CENTER FOR WOMEN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS NGO

Agate Center contributes to the exercise of the civil, socio-economic, educational, health and cultural rights of girls and women with disabilities in Armenia through advocacy, information dissemination, awareness raising and cooperation. During its 16 years of operation, the Organization has implemented more than 80 local, national and international projects that have contributed to the exercise of the rights of girls and women with disabilities and have had a positive impact on more than 10,000 beneficiaries (persons with disabilities, their family members, state and local government representatives, representatives of disabled and human rights civil society organizations, media representatives, orphanages, universities, colleges, professional guidance centers, schools, other institutions and individuals providing healthcare services).

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteer tasks may include assisting the staff in project implementation, teaching conversational English to the beneficiaries, conducting presentations, leading clubs, and organizing events. Additionally, they welcome volunteers with skills such as psychological support, counseling for women with special needs, experience in inclusive theater and sports, and web development. 

SHEN NGO

The mission of Shen NGO is to promote social and economic development and empowerment of remote and vulnerable rural communities of Armenia with active involvement of community members. Over the years, they have worked tirelessly in more than 370 rural communities, implementing various development initiatives at every stage of rural development. From providing humanitarian aid to facilitating integrated approaches to rural development and rehabilitating physical and social infrastructures, they have been committed to uplifting these communities.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: As part of their mission, Shen volunteers can assist with operational tasks in the tree nursery, such as weeding, sowing, irrigation, and seed collection. Volunteers will also support the NGO with field research activities, including forest mapping, soil analysis, and the analysis of irrigation systems, among others.

RESTART GYUMRI

Restart Gyumri is dedicated to empowering and uniting young people in Gyumri and the Shirak region who are passionate about making positive changes in their communities. The organization provides a platform for students and young adults to engage in decision-making processes at all levels and fosters cultural diversity, non-discrimination, and the development of democratic values. They aim to create a vibrant youth platform that addresses the needs of the region and promotes collaboration among youth from different communities. As part of their mission, they organize educational courses and cultural projects to support the personal and professional development of local youth.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteers can organize and lead courses on various topics, such as foreign languages, programming, social sciences and political science and other similar fields which will benefit the young people’s skills and knowledge both on personal and professional level.

KASA SWISS HUMANITARIAN FOUNDATION

Since 2008, KASA has been striving to meet the new needs of Armenian society. Their main focus is on education and training programs (be they face-to-face or remote), promotion of civil society, and overall contribution to the sustainable and harmonious development of the country. KASA is also involved in developing local tourism, allowing for others to see the cultural and human riches of Armenia.

Typical Volunteer Tasks: Volunteers at KASA typically engage in organizing trainings, debates, round table discussions, and workshops aimed at capacity building and knowledge dissemination. Volunteers also contribute to the promotion of intercultural dialogue and international youth cooperation, fostering connections and understanding across borders. Additionally, volunteers assist in the organization of debate clubs and French movie screenings, providing opportunities for cultural enrichment and language learning. They may also offer free French language classes to youth, empowering them with valuable linguistic skills.
